Women’s Symphony League 2010 - 2011 Silver Screen Classical
Dear Symphony League Members,
I am excited to begin our 2010 - 2011 WSL year exploring together some of the beautiful classical music that has been used in film. My dad is a die hard classical music fan. Growing up in Houston, my family regularly attended performances by the Houston Symphony and the Houston Grand Opera. As a teenager, I played violin in both my high school orchestra and with the Rice Symphony Orchestra. Even with all my early exposure to classical music, like many of you, my introduction to the combination of classical music and film was as a child, in a movie theater, glued to Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
We’re going to be busy this year! In September, we will celebrate our own “WSL Walk of Fame” with a style show and brunch at Hollytree Country Club. We can never say “thank you” enough to our amazing members and I am looking forward to honoring our Classics, Keynotes and Gala Guild.
We will have four general meetings this year, all at First Presbyterian Church, beginning in October with Amadeus. Dr. Cameron Rose, Director of Choral Activities at UT Tyler will be our guest. In addition to his Bachelor and Master of Arts in Composition and his Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting, Dr. Rose also holds an Advanced Studies Certificate in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television.
Our second general meeting, White Christmas, will be an evening event featuring the East Texas Men in Harmony singing Christmas favorites. We will award service pins to last year’s President, Ball Chairs and our new twenty-five year members.
The 2011 Family Concert, January 15th, will be a matinee performance of Disney in Concert. January will also bring our two winter fundraisers, Brown Derby Bunco, our bunco evening at Potpourri House, and Games Day at the Brown Derby, our annual games day, meeting and luncheon held this year at Hollytree.
On February 3rd and 4th, WSL will help to sponsor the school concerts, continuing our passion for and commitment to music education in our community. Continuing our association with Classical Kids Live!, we will be helping to present this year’s program, Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage. At our February general meeting, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, we will enjoy songs from the movies performed by Colleen Mallette, Professor of Voice at TCU. That same evening Colleen will be performing at the ETSO Party of Note, a perfect Valentine outing for you and someone you love!
Our grandest celebration of the year comes in early March when the RED CARPET BALL is unveiled at Harvey Hall. Our “awards show” will honor our senior JSL students and their families for their service to and support of WSL and ETSO.
Our final meeting of the year in April, Out of Africa, will feature Dr. Michael Thrasher, Director of the School of Performing Arts at UT Tyler performing for us the beautiful Adagio movement from Mozart’s clarinet concerto featured so prominently in the film. We will be also be welcoming that evening our new proposed members.
We certainly have a full year ahead. Grab a friend, a bucket of popcorn and a soft drink and join us!
Living in anticipation for all the wonderful things ahead of us,
Treacey Smith WSL President, 2010 - 2011 |
